
In the fuel yard at Tarkwa, the maintenance supervisor kept a spiral-bound notebook the drivers called "the leak log." Every entry told the same story: a date, a tanker number, and a pinhole. Over the previous three years the log had filled with 168 entries — an average of one internal corrosion leak every 8 operating days across the company's fleet of 8 carbon-steel tankers hauling diesel from the Takoradi and Tema terminals to the gold mines of Ghana's Ashanti and Western regions.
"It wasn't the leak itself that hurt," the operations manager recalled. "It was everything the leak dragged behind it. Twenty-four to forty-eight hours out of service while a tank was drained, purged, and patched. Five hundred to two thousand litres of diesel lost before a driver noticed the trail. West African diesel is not the same fuel that powers European or North American fleets. Where the EU caps diesel sulphur at 10 parts per million, fuel sold across much of West Africa carries 500 to 3,000 ppm — fifty to three hundred times more. Sulphur alone does not corrode steel, but the chemistry turns hostile inside a tanker: sulphur compounds combine with the water vapour that condenses on a tank's internal surfaces during humid nights to form weak sulphuric acid, which settles on the steel walls and eats into them from the inside.
Carbon steel has no defence against this attack. The standard mitigation is an internal epoxy coating, but a coating is only as good as its application and its adhesion — and the flexing of a road tanker, the abrasive slosh of fuel, and the inevitable scratch of a dropped inspection light are enough to breach it. Once the coating cracks at a single point, the acid concentrates there and corrosion accelerates in exactly the place the coating was meant to protect. The result is what the Tarkwa yard knew intimately: pinholes, pitting, and a tank that rotted from the inside while looking pristine on the outside.
There was a second, quieter cost the leak log never recorded: weight. The company's steel tankers each tipped the scales at 9,500 kg empty. Every one of those kilograms was dead weight that could have been diesel but wasn't — a permanent tax on every trip, paid at the pump and on the axle.

The headline: Zero corrosion leaks in 19 months, across 6 aluminium tankers hauling the same high-sulphur diesel on the same Takoradi–Tema–mine routes that had pinhole-perforated the steel fleet every 8 days. Six Hualu tankers now move the volume that 8 steel units handled — a 25% fleet reduction — while carrying 5,000 more litres per trip and cutting the cost of fuel delivered per litre roughly in half. "The leak log is empty now," the maintenance supervisor said. "I use it as a notebook for tyre rotations."
